After a Long Shift at the Ghat, Even Passing Water Burns
I am forty-four, and I earn my living carrying loads at the launch ghat here in Narayanganj. Sacks, crates, suitcases, all day on my shoulders. The trouble waits for the end of the shift. Once I sit down to rest, passing urine starts to burn, and it burns all the way through. Some evenings what comes out looks cloudy, like water with dust in it. The worst moment is mid-load, when the urge hits suddenly and there is nowhere to set the weight down.
My younger brother works at the same ghat, and he had watched me wince once too often. One morning he would not take the launch home until I had been seen. He took me to our own doctor. The doctor heard the burning, the cloudy evenings, and the sudden urges, and looked through my earlier reports twice over. Then he spoke plainly. My next visit, he said, should not be to him. It should be to a urologist, the doctor who looks after the passages that carry urine out of the body. In a man, he said, the low parts joined with that work come under his care as well.
That night my brother searched DoctorBD24 and found the doctors practising in Narayanganj. We chose a chamber I could reach after the last launch. The visit is done, and I am following what was written for me.

After a Long Shift at the Ghat, Even Passing Water Burns
He Asked About the Ghat First
The urologist wanted my working day before he wanted my symptoms. How many loads in a shift. When the burning starts, at noon or only in the evening. My brother answered half of it himself. The sudden urges in the middle of a load, those I described myself.
Reports Read Before Any Promise
Then he opened my earlier reports and read every page, the oldest twice. He gave no opinion while he read. Only at the end did he say what they suggested, and where they left him unsure.
Where the Burning Ends
He pressed low on my belly, gently, with both hands. He asked if the heavy feeling after a long shift sat in that spot. It did, most evenings. He said the examination sat comfortably beside the reports.
The Weeks Ahead, Written Down
He gave me one medicine of his own, to be taken exactly as that line says. Fresh reports come after some weeks, and I go back to him with those. He did not hide the harder parts. If an operation is what this needs one day, he will tell me to my face. If the trouble sits with another specialist, he will say that instead.
Nothing Crossed Out on My Old Page
The medicines our own doctor gave me earlier were left exactly as they stand. He never lifted his pen over that page. His own medicine went on his own line, apart from everything else.
Scrolling on the Steps
We waited on the steps for my papers. My brother passed his phone over, and I drifted through the general surgeon pages for Narayanganj. The papers came, and we caught the launch home.
Questions Before the Rickshaw
Why does the burning wait until the shift ends?
The pattern of my day was part of the story, he said, and he had written it down. The reports would judge the rest.
What does the cloudy look mean?
A look by itself earned no answer from him. Fresh reports after some weeks would say more than either of us could today.
Can I keep carrying loads while this runs its course?
He did not take me off the ghat. Keep working, he said, but do not hold on all afternoon because the shore is far.
Why fresh reports after weeks, not this week?
Reports done now would repeat the ones already on his desk, he said. Weeks apart, a change becomes something he can read.
Could an operation be part of my story one day?
Possibly, he said, and possibly not. He refused to guess before the fresh reports, and promised a straight answer then.
If an evening turns bad, what sends me to hospital before morning?
An evening when no urine will come at all and my lower belly swells tight and aches. Fever arriving with shaking, and a deep pain in my back or along my side. Urine coming thick with blood while passing it turns into a real struggle. A fierce pain low in the belly or in the groin that refuses to settle. On such an evening, we do not wait for morning.
