Three Times a Night, and Drops That Come After I Am Done

I am sixty-three, and I worked on the railway for forty years before retiring home to Dinajpur. My body never gave up the night shifts. Three times a night I am up for the latrine, regular as a timetable. The stream that once finished quickly now runs thin and weak. Worst of all, after I have waited and shaken and come back out, drops still leak. Onto my lungi. Onto my pyjamas. Some mornings the cloth smells, and my wife says nothing, which is worse than scolding.

My son noticed the wet patches and asked me straight out one morning. We went to our own doctor that same week. He heard me out fully and looked over the reports I already had. Then he told me a urologist was the right next step. This doctor, he explained, looks after the passages urine travels through as it leaves the body. In a man, he said, those passages run close to other low parts, and this doctor's work covers that whole corner.

After supper my son sat beside me with his phone and opened DoctorBD24. We went through the Dinajpur doctors directory together, him reading the names, me listening. One chamber sat in the afternoon, which suits an old man. The next week I was in front of the specialist, telling him about the three risings and the drops.

Three Times a Night, and Drops That Come After I Am Done

While the Bench Outside Filled Up

We reached well before my turn. My son passed me his phone to fill the wait. I opened DoctorBD24 and idly looked through the general surgeon listings for Dinajpur, out of plain curiosity. Then they called my name, and my son pocketed the phone.

He Took My Nights in Order, Like a Timetable

He wanted my nights in order. How many risings? Does the stream stop in the middle, or run thin the whole way? How long do I stand before the first drop falls? I answered the way I once answered a station master. My son added what I had left out: the forgotten mornings, and the smell on the clothes.

Every Page of the Old File Read First

Then he took the folder from my son. He read my earlier reports one page at a time. Then he pressed his hand low on my belly, gently, and asked if it felt heavy anywhere. After that he laid it out in plain words: what the reports said, what his own examination said, and how the two sat together.

A Plan Plain Enough to Follow at Home

He gave me one medicine of his own, to be taken exactly as he wrote it. My own doctor's medicines were left just as they stand; he never lifted a pen over that page. His medicine sits on his own page. After some weeks I am to have fresh reports done and come back with them. If an operation is what this comes to, he will tell me himself. If the trouble belongs to another specialist, he will say that too.

Things I Asked Before We Stood Up

Why do drops keep coming after I think I have finished?

A weak finish can leave a little behind, he said, and it slips out later. He wanted to see fresh reports before he said any more than that.

Is rising three times a night just what a man my age does?

He would not lay it all on age. The reports and my answers together would show how much was habit, and how much the trouble.

Should I drink less water after the evening meal?

He told me to leave my habits as they are for now. He wants a few weeks of ordinary nights first, with his medicine running as written.

What will he hold the fresh reports against?

The old ones from my folder. Where the new pages differ from the old is what the next visit is mostly about.

Is an operation waiting somewhere down this line?

Some troubles like mine do reach one, he said, and plenty never do. He will judge from the reports and tell me to my face first.

Which night signs should send me to hospital without waiting for morning?

A night when no urine comes at all and my lower belly swells and aches. Fever with shaking, and pain in my back or my side. Urine thick with blood while passing gets harder. A heavy pain low in the belly or the groin that will not ease. On any such night, my son is to take me in at once.
