I Stand and Wait, and the Stream Stops Halfway

I am sixty-six, and I taught at a primary school for thirty-five years before retiring. Passing urine now takes me longer than washing my hands and face. I stand and wait, and nothing comes. When the stream finally begins it runs thin, and halfway through it stops, so I wait again. Most nights I am up twice, standing in the dark, hoping the rest will finish.

My daughter noticed on her visits that I took longer and longer in the bathroom. She took me to our own doctor, who listened to everything and went through my earlier reports. He said I should be seen by a urologist. That is the doctor, he explained, who looks after the passages urine travels through on its way out of the body.

On Friday afternoon my daughter sat beside me with her phone, and we searched DoctorBD24 together. We opened the list of doctors in Chattogram and she read the names aloud while I listened. We chose a chamber near her house so she could come along. I sat in front of the urologist the following week.

I Stand and Wait, and the Stream Stops Halfway

Questions Before Anything Else

He began with questions, not with my file. How long did I stand before the stream started? How many times did it stop in between? How often was I up at night, and did I push or strain? I answered slowly, thinking back over the last year. My daughter added the parts she had noticed at home.

He Read Every Page of My Old File

Only after the questions did he open my earlier reports, reading each one fully. Then he pressed my lower belly with a gentle hand and asked if it felt full. He explained, in words I could follow, what the reports and the examination said side by side. Nothing would be decided in a hurry, he told me.

What He Wrote Down for Me

My earlier medicines were not touched at all; they stay exactly as our own doctor wrote them. His own medicine went onto his own paper as its own line, to be taken exactly as written. While he wrote, my mind went back to the bench outside. There I had glanced through the general surgeon pages for Chattogram on my daughter's phone while waiting to be called in. He fixed my next visit after some weeks, with fresh reports to be done before it. If an operation was ever needed, he said, he would say so plainly. And if my trouble belonged to another doctor, he would point me there himself.

What I Asked, With My Daughter Listening

Why do I wait so long for the stream to start?

He said the long wait, the thin stream and the stopping were all one story. The reports would show him more, and only then would he judge what should change.

Why does it stop halfway and begin again?

He noted it carefully, because the pattern mattered to him. He asked me to keep count for a few weeks and bring it back: stops, night risings, all of it.

Will I still be up twice every night?

He would not promise me my old sleep back. He said we would see what the fresh reports showed and how I answered the plan. If the nights stayed broken, I was to come sooner.

Did he stop any of my old medicines?

Not one of them. They stay as our doctor wrote them, and his own stands separate on his page. He said a prescription is another doctor's word, and he does not rub out another man's word.

What will happen at the visit after the fresh reports?

He will read the new reports against the old ones and tell me what has moved. If the plan needs changing, he will change it and explain why.

When should my daughter take me straight to hospital?

If a night and a morning pass and no urine comes, while the lower belly grows tight and sore, she should not wait. Shaking fever with an ache deep in the back or side is another alarm. If the urine turns thick with blood and passing becomes a struggle, that is the same day too. A hard pain low in the belly or groin that does not lift also means hospital, not home.
