I Fell Into the Ditch, and Now Turning My Head Hurts

I am forty-seven, and I grow paddy on low land outside Noakhali. Two weeks ago I was riding my bicycle home along the raised road beside our fields. A rickshaw came fast from the other side, I pulled over too far, and the wheel slipped off the edge. I went down into the ditch with the bicycle on top of me. My neck took the worst of it.

Since that day, turning my head to the left brings a sharp pull. Checking the field bunds means turning my whole body instead. My doctor moved my head gently, asked where it hurt, and said pictures of the inside of my neck were needed first. The pictures are taken. What I hold now is a wait, and a neck that reminds me of the ditch every time I look sideways.

Out here we know the doctor who treats us, but the picture side was new to me. My nephew told me a radiologist reads those pictures and writes the report my doctor is counting on. I started by looking at the directory of doctors in Noakhali on DoctorBD24 to see who does this reading work. I wanted to understand whose hands my pictures were in before the report reached my doctor.

Field work with a neck that will not turn

Paddy work asks for looking in every direction. Water levels, weeds, a bund leaking on the far side. I stand at one corner now and turn from the waist like an old man. My brother walks the far bunds for me. It helps, but I dislike seeing my own field through another man's eyes.

From the ditch to the picture room

The fall itself took seconds. The soreness stayed, and sleep came in short pieces because every pillow position pulled at my neck. My doctor listened to the whole account before sending me for pictures. He wanted the inside view before advising me about work, rest, or anything else. That order of things made sense to me, even if the waiting does not.

How the reading is done

The radiologist sits with the pictures themselves, not with me. He looks at my neck from each angle the pictures give him. An old picture from years back would be placed beside the new set if one existed. Then he puts his findings into a written report addressed to my doctor. His skill is in that reading, and my treatment waits on it.

The medicine shelf at home stays untouched

There are medicines at home that my doctor prescribed well before this accident. I take them on his word, at his times. The man reading my pictures has no say over that shelf. Only my own doctor, who wrote those prescriptions knowing my full history, can tell me to change a single tablet.

A neighbour with a different kind of problem

Our neighbour asked about a lump he has carried under his arm for months. I said my picture wait would not answer his question. A lump is a different matter. When a doctor says an operation may be needed, people here check general surgeon listings for Noakhali on DoctorBD24 to see who practises nearby. His own doctor should look at that lump first, in person.

Things I asked myself during the wait

Why pictures of my neck, when the doctor already examined me?

His hands find stiffness and soreness from outside. The pictures show the inside, which hands cannot reach, before he advises me further.

Does the radiologist ever meet patients like me?

His work is with the pictures and the report, not my neck in his hands. My treating doctor is the one I sit before.

What happens if the pictures come out unclear?

Then another set may be asked for. A clear reading matters more to my doctor than a fast one built on guesses.

Will this report decide whether I can return to full field work?

Not by itself. My doctor will weigh it together with how my neck moves and feels when he checks me again.

Can the picture reader adjust my home medicines?

No. Those stay exactly on my own doctor's instructions, and any change comes only from him.

What warning signs would send me to hospital today itself?

If pain turns severe all at once, or weakness spreads into an arm, I am not waiting. Bleeding or hard breathing means the same: hospital that very day.
