One Fall on Deck and My Knee Put My Sea Work on Hold
I am forty four and I work on a fishing boat out of Cox's Bazar. Three weeks ago my foot slipped on the wet deck and I landed hard on my knee. The swelling went down slowly, but the knee still gives way when I climb. My own doctor checked how far it bends and how steady it feels. Then he sent me for a scan, for pictures of the inside of my knee. He said the report would guide what he advised next.
Until that report comes, I stay on shore. The boat goes out without me, and I watch from the jetty in the morning. Every day on land is a day without earnings for my family. So I think about the report more than I should. Will it be read carefully? Will it be clear enough for my doctor to judge if I can haul nets again?
An older boatman told me the man who reads such pictures does only that work. I had assumed my own doctor would look and decide on the spot. Learning otherwise changed how I searched. I started with the general directory of doctors in Coxs Bazar to see the different kinds of doctors listed there. From there I looked for the picture reading doctors in particular.

One Fall on Deck and My Knee Put My Sea Work on Hold
Why a shore wait sits so hard on a boat worker
Fishing work does not pause for one man. My doctor knows this, yet he would not clear me for sea work on a guess. He wants the pictures read properly first. A second fall at sea, on an unready knee, could be far worse. So I wait on shore, doing small repair jobs near the harbour.
The quiet work behind a single report
The radiologist takes the pictures of my knee and studies them part by part. Nothing is treated and nothing is decided in that room. If any earlier pictures of mine existed, they would be placed alongside for comparison. Then a written report goes to my own doctor.
The tablets I already take stay untouched
My doctor gave me a routine to follow while the knee settles. I keep to it exactly, morning and evening, just as he wrote it. The doctor who reads my pictures will not alter that routine in any way. If my own doctor later wants a change, he will tell me himself.
A crewmate's operation search showed me the separate roles
A crewmate hurt his belly lifting a crate and was told to see a surgeon. His family read through the general surgeon pages for Coxs Bazar to find who handles operations in our area. That search stayed in my mind. Surgeons, picture doctors, and my own doctor each carry a different part.
Things I wanted to know before going back to sea
Will the report say whether I can return to boat work?
Not by itself. The report describes what the pictures show. My own doctor judges my return from the report plus how my knee holds weight. That judgement is his to make, not the report's.
What if the pictures of my knee come out unclear?
Then the radiologist can say the set is not clear enough to read with confidence. More pictures may be suggested so my doctor is not left guessing. I would accept that delay over a reading nobody trusts.
Can the doctor who reads the pictures change my tablets?
No. That doctor never touches the routine my own doctor set. The reading work begins and ends with the pictures and the written report. Any change to what I take comes only from my own doctor.
Why does my doctor not just look at the pictures himself?
He could glance at them, the way I can glance at the sea and guess weather. Careful reading is a separate skill, practised every day by the radiologist. My doctor wants that practised eye before he advises me.
Should I test the knee with heavy work while I wait?
I will not. Testing it with heavy loads could undo whatever healing has happened. I would rather lose a few more days than lose a whole season.
What if the knee pain suddenly becomes unbearable while I am waiting?
Then go to hospital that same day, without waiting for any report. Sudden severe pain, bleeding, trouble breathing, or sudden weakness anywhere in the body are not things to sleep on at home. Reach hospital first. The paperwork can catch up afterwards.
