When the House Empties, My Unease Fills Every Room

I am sixty one and I have run this house for forty years. Cooking, prayers, grandchildren, the yard, all of it was mine to hold. This winter something shifted. If my son steps out for tea, my chest starts to tighten. If my daughter in law goes to the market, I follow her to the gate. I tell myself to be brave. The quiet still gets louder.

Nights are worse when the room feels empty. My husband snores beside me and I can drift off for a while. When he travels to his village, I keep a grandchild close just to hear breathing. During the day I count hours until someone returns. Small sounds startle me. A closed door makes my hands shake. I used to enjoy an hour alone with my sewing. Now I leave the needle and sit by the front door, waiting.

My son said this fear deserved a doctor, not scolding or jokes. He explained that some doctors work only with troubles of the mind and sleep. I did not know such doctors sat in regular chambers. One evening he opened the Sylhet doctors directory on DoctorBD24 and showed me names listed close to home. Seeing a proper listing made the step feel ordinary. I agreed to meet one and simply tell my story.

When the House Empties, My Unease Fills Every Room

What fills my head when everyone goes out

When the gate closes, my thoughts start naming dangers one after another. What if I fall and nobody hears me? I check the stove, sit down, then check it again. My body stays alert even when I am tired. By evening I am angry at myself for feeling this way.

The first sitting was mostly listening

The doctor asked when this fear began and how my days look now. Sleep came up early, then food, routine, and my general health. My earlier reports were read before any suggestion was made. If a physical reason needs checking first, another doctor would do that part. That plain honesty settled me a little.

Change would come in small steps across return visits, I was told. Regular talking sittings were mentioned, and medicine as a possibility, not a promise. My family could join only if I agreed first.

A different search for my husband

Last month my husband was told a swelling in his belly needed an operation. We looked at general surgeon listings for Sylhet on DoctorBD24 to see who handles such work. That search belonged to his body, not to my trouble. Every problem has its own kind of doctor.

How I treat the medicine part

If medicine joins my plan, I take it in the exact amount and timing written for me. I would never drop it suddenly because one morning feels calmer. If a tablet leaves me dizzy or restless, I speak up promptly. Changes to that prescription wait until I have spoken with the doctor who wrote it.

Do I have to share private family matters?

No. What I share, and how much, stays my choice. Family joins a conversation only with my permission. Trust grew slowly as I saw that respected.

Some mornings I feel almost normal. Should I still keep the appointment?

Yes. Calm mornings are part of the pattern too, so I describe them honestly. A good morning does not cancel months of fearful nights. My short sleep notes help each visit.

Could my body be part of this trouble?

That question was taken seriously from the start. My general health was asked about in detail. If a body check must come first, the doctor says so plainly.

Will talking sittings be part of my care?

They were offered as one possible part of care, not a fixed rule. Nothing was settled before my story was heard. We review sleep and daily life at each return visit.

I worry people will gossip about these visits. What do I do?

From outside, a chamber visit looks like any other doctor visit. I tell only the people I choose to tell. My son knows, my neighbour does not.

If thoughts of harming myself feel too strong to push away one night, what should I do right then?

Wake someone in the house and say clearly that you feel unsafe tonight. Ask them to stay close and take you to hospital that same night. Do not shut yourself alone in a room with those thoughts. The same holds after several sleepless nights with a racing mind. It also holds if washing or eating suddenly becomes impossible.
