My Hands Are Still Asleep When I Wake

I am sixty-one, and my hands wake up later than I do. Every morning both of them feel dead, heavy, as if I am wearing thick gloves I cannot take off. There is no grip in them at first. I shake them over the side of the bed and rub one against the other until the feeling creeps back. It is always worst straight after sleep. Resting in the day does not bring it on the same way. I am looking for a neurologist in Mymensingh who will sit and hear this pattern properly.

I will lay out the whole routine at the visit, because the routine is the evidence. What time it starts. How long the dead feeling lasts. Whether some mornings are worse than others. The specialist will hear that first, ask how far back it goes, and read any earlier reports I bring before forming a view. He may test the strength in my fingers or ask me to pick up small things. Nothing gets decided before he has seen the pattern and the papers together. If he thinks another kind of doctor should hear it first, he should say so plainly.

Below this writing you will find the neurologists who practise in Mymensingh, with chamber addresses and hours on their profiles. The site carries a broader directory as well, the full list of doctors in Mymensingh, if you would rather look at everyone at once.

My Hands Are Still Asleep When I Wake

The Prescription on My Shelf Does Not Get Guessed At

I take regular medicine for a long-running complaint, and these dead hands give me no excuse to meddle with it. The dose stays what the prescription says, morning and evening, good hand days and bad ones alike. Waking up numb does not mean I need more. A clear morning does not mean I can skip. If that medicine ever needs adjusting, the doctor who prescribed it will do it, after seeing me and hearing the full story.

Dead Hands Are Slow. These Signs Are Not

My morning numbness creeps; it does not strike. I keep a different list for the things that strike. One side of the body suddenly weak, an arm or a leg that will not obey. The face suddenly fallen on one side. Speech suddenly slurred or strange, words coming out wrong. A headache like a hammer blow, worse than anything before it. Shaking that begins and does not stop. Vision suddenly gone from one eye, or from both. The mind suddenly clouded, unable to follow a simple thing. Any of those means a hospital, or my regular doctor, the same day.

A Second Directory, Noted and Left Alone

My son asked whether hands like mine ever end up being a surgeon's business. I told him I do not know, and I am not borrowing worries. Still, this site lists general surgeons in Mymensingh in a directory of their own. If a specialist ever sends me in that direction, the names will be there.

Questions I Have Saved Up

Why is it always worst first thing in the morning?

That timing is the first thing I will put to the specialist. The deadness follows sleep, not work or a long day. I would rather hear what he makes of it than sit guessing alone.

How long should the feeling take to come back?

Some mornings it is minutes of shaking and rubbing. Other mornings it drags. I have started marking the slow days on a calendar, so what I describe is real.

I have blood reports from last year. Any point bringing them?

I will bring what I have. Specialists read what exists before they form a view, and old papers sometimes answer questions I never thought to ask.

Will he check my hands himself, or only listen?

Both, I expect. Listening first, then grip, then small tasks with the fingers. Hands that cannot hold a cup at dawn deserve a proper look, not only talk.

Is it worth mentioning that daytime rest does not cause it?

Yes. What does not bring it on is part of the pattern too. Sleep does it; resting in a chair does not. Those differences may matter to him.

What if one hand goes weak at midday and my words come out wrong?

That is not my morning pattern, and I would not treat it as such. Sudden weakness and words going wrong belong to the same-day list. Hospital, or my regular doctor, that day.
