Sir Salimullah Medical College & Mitford Hospital
Sir Salimullah Medical College is one of the leading government medical colleges in Bangladesh, located in the historic part of Dhaka, the capital city. Affiliated with the University of Dhaka, it is known for its high standards of medical education and healthcare services. Mitford Hospital, which is part of this college, is the first general hospital in the eastern part of undivided Bengal and remains one of the best medical facilities in Bangladesh.
Mitford Hospital started its journey on May 1, 1858, making it the first hospital of its kind in the region under British rule. The hospital is named after Sir Robert Mitford, the then Collector of Dhaka and a long-serving judge of the Provincial Court of Appeal.
On July 1, 1875, the Dhaka Medical School was established, and on April 2, 1887, the foundation stone for a new school building was laid by W.R. Larminie, the Commissioner of Dhaka Division. The new building was officially opened on September 22, 1889, by Sir S.C. Bayley, the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.
In 1903, Nawab Sir Salimullah made a generous donation to set up a maternity ward and a female eye ward at the school. Later, in 1962, the Dhaka Medical School became a medical college and was renamed Mitford Medical College. The college was renamed again in 1963 to Sir Salimullah Medical College in honor of Nawab Sir Salimullah’s contributions to the institution.
From 1963 to 1972, the college offered condensed courses for the MBBS degree. In 1972, under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the college was fully upgraded to a comprehensive medical college. The first batch of MBBS students enrolled in 1973, marking a new chapter in the college’s history.
