About Us

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the leading state agency in Bangladesh dedicated to the treatment of mental health issues, as well as the development of mental health policies, research, and the training of mental health professionals.

Located in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, NIMH was established in 2001 to meet the growing healthcare needs of Bangladesh’s diverse population, which exceeds 164 million people. Before this, from 1981, the institute functioned as the Institute of Mental Health & Research at various medical college hospitals in Dhaka.

This state-of-the-art facility employs over 300 staff members and provides comprehensive services, including outpatient, inpatient, and emergency care for both child and adult mental health disorders. As the largest teaching psychiatric hospital in Bangladesh, NIMH plays a vital role in training future leaders in psychiatry, psychology, and medicine. It also maintains a strong focus on research and the development of mental health policies to improve the country’s mental healthcare system.

NIMH is a key part of the Directorate General of Health Services, which is under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Bangladesh Government. Through its efforts, NIMH is shaping the future of mental health care in the country and working toward a healthier, more informed society.
