Overview
The National Center for Control of Rheumatic Fever & Heart Disease is a fully government-owned national centre in Dhaka. It works on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic fever and related heart conditions. The centre runs under the Directorate General of Health Services, within the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The centre was established on 1 November 1988. Its full address is Q99C+968, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka 1207, Bangladesh. Care is provided through an outpatient clinic, and registered patients return here for planned follow-up.
Services
The centre covers four main conditions: rheumatic fever, rheumatic heart disease, ischemic heart disease and hypertensive heart disease. Rheumatic fever usually follows a streptococcal throat infection. Without timely treatment, the infection-related illness can permanently damage the heart valves.
Rheumatic disease accounts for a large share of heart-valve surgery in Bangladesh, so early detection carries real weight. Alongside treatment, the centre runs health-education and awareness programmes across the country. It also trains doctors and paramedics and carries out research in its field.
Diagnostic services
Patients attending the clinic can have echocardiography and ECG tests at the centre. Laboratory investigations support diagnosis, treatment planning and follow-up. Hypertension screening is also provided, since raised blood pressure is one of the conditions managed here.
The supporting work includes microbiology, pathology and epidemiology. Test findings are reviewed together with the clinical examination. Patients on long-term follow-up should bring their earlier reports to each visit.
Specialist consultations
Specialist consultations are available in cardiology and paediatric care. Children with rheumatic fever and adults with heart disease are both seen at this centre. The wider team covers cardiology, paediatrics, microbiology, pathology and epidemiology.
Follow-up care is organised through registration. Registered patients receive an injection card for secondary prophylaxis, then return at the scheduled interval for the next injection. Keeping the card safe and attending on the given date helps the follow-up continue without gaps.
Location and access
The centre stands in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of Dhaka. Its address is Q99C+968, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka 1207, Bangladesh. No official day-by-day outpatient schedule is published, so visitors should confirm the current sitting arrangements with the centre directly before travelling.
Patients attending for follow-up should carry their injection card and previous prescriptions. First-time patients should bring any earlier test reports they hold. These papers help the consulting team review the history without delay.
