Kidney Foundation Hospital & Research Institute

Kidney Foundation Hospital & Research Institute is Bangladesh's largest dedicated kidney hospital, located in Mirpur, Dhaka. Formally established in June 2002, it began operating in October 2003 in a rented building with only seven staff and six dialysis machines on loan, funded by a modest capital of Tk 75,000. Today it is a non-profit hospital and institute offering affordable, state-of-the-art treatment for acute and chronic kidney disease, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), kidney transplantation, interventional nephrology, clinical urology, a modern diagnostic laboratory and imaging services, and indoor and outpatient facilities. In July 2011 it expanded into a 150-bedded hospital, and it now runs a 300-bed facility with a large dialysis unit, serving hundreds of outpatients every day. Its founder and chief consultant, Prof. Dr. Harun-Ur-Rashid, performed Bangladesh's first live-related kidney transplant in 1981. Beyond treatment, the foundation conducts research on kidney disease detection and prevention in rural and urban populations, and trains doctors, nurses and technologists. True to its mission of hope for kidney patients, those with little or no means receive treatment free of charge.
