Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital
Islamia Eye Hospital, a renowned institution in Bangladesh, has been providing quality eye care for over 50 years. As the country’s largest multi-specialty eye hospital, it ensures that people from all socio-economic backgrounds receive the same high standard of treatment, although the facilities offered vary according to the patient’s preferences. The hospital provides both general low-cost services and private, more upscale options for those seeking added comfort.
Founded as a charitable dispensary by the philanthropist and industrialist Mr. M. A. Ispahani, Islamia Eye Hospital officially opened in 1960 as Bangladesh’s first eye hospital. Remaining a non-profit organization throughout its history, it has not only offered essential eye care but also pioneered various specialized treatments in ophthalmology.
In addition to its medical services, Islamia Eye Hospital took the lead in training ophthalmologists and medical staff. In 1992, the M. A. Ispahani Institute of Ophthalmology was established to offer advanced training in ophthalmology to both doctors and healthcare workers.
To further expand its impact, Islamia has recently opened three branch hospitals in remote areas of Bangladesh (Jamalpur, Barisal, and Naogaon) as part of the “Creating Access to Eye Care Services for Rural People” project, supported by ORBIS International. This initiative aims to bring eye care to underserved rural communities.
