About Us

Overview

Habiganj 250 Bed District Hospital is the government district hospital for Habiganj district in Sylhet Division. The hospital address is Habiganj Sadar, Habiganj 3300. The Directorate General of Health Services records this facility under code 10002071.

For many years the hospital functioned with 100 beds before an upgrade in July 2017. That upgrade raised capacity to 250 beds in a new eight-storey building. Residents also know it as Habiganj Sadar Hospital and as the Adhunik Hospital.

Services and departments

The medicine ward accommodates the largest share of admitted patients at this hospital. Patients are admitted there with fever, breathing difficulties, diarrhoea and chest infections. The men's medicine ward sits on the seventh floor of the new building.

Children receive inpatient treatment on a separate children's ward on the fifth floor. Sick newborn babies are also cared for here under the special care newborn listing. In October 2026, over one hundred measles patients were treated here simultaneously, against twenty designated measles beds.

Diagnostic services

Blood tests, ultrasonogram, X-ray and ECG examinations are carried out inside the hospital. A digital X-ray machine was installed here in 2021. Most other investigations are completed outside the hospital.

Certain medicines are supplied by the hospital, while others are purchased from outside pharmacies. Patients should allow for this arrangement when planning a visit.

Inpatient services

Admission follows an emergency attendance or an outpatient consultation. Patients remain on the wards until discharge or onward referral.

On days when every bed is occupied, treatment continues on floor spaces and verandas. This arrangement applies until a regular bed becomes available.

Emergency care

The emergency department receives urgent cases, including severe breathing difficulty and road accident injuries. Emergency registration is completed with a ticket carrying a nominal fee. Initial treatment begins here before any transfer to a ward.

This hospital has no intensive care unit for critically ill patients. Such patients are stabilised here and then referred onward. Referrals are usually directed towards Sylhet or Dhaka.

Outpatient services

Planned consultations begin at the outdoor ticket counter, where a ticket is issued for a nominal fee. Patients then wait for their turn to be seen. The clinician may provide treatment, order investigations or advise admission.

Previous prescriptions, investigation reports and X-ray films should accompany the patient at each visit.

Location and access

The hospital stands in Habiganj Sadar and serves all nine upazilas of the district. These are Habiganj Sadar, Ajmiriganj, Bahubal, Baniachang, Chunarughat, Lakhai, Madhabpur, Nabiganj and Shayestaganj. Tea garden communities travel in from the Chunarughat, Bahubal and Madhabpur side.
