BIRDEM General Hospital 2 (Child And Mother)

About Us

The Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS) was founded on 28 February 1956 in Dhaka, led by the late National Professor Dr. M Ibrahim (1911-1989), along with a group of social workers, philanthropists, physicians, and civil servants. It began its journey with a small outpatient clinic in 1957, operating from a modest 380 sq ft semi-permanent structure in Segun Bagicha, Dhaka. Over time, this clinic evolved into the renowned Ibrahim Memorial Diabetes Centre at Shahbagh, Dhaka, named in honour of Prof. M Ibrahim after his passing in 1989.

BADAS is recognised for its unique and comprehensive diabetes care and research program, serving patients nationwide. This program is managed through its central institute, the Bangladesh Institute of Research & Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine, and Metabolic Disorders (BIRDEM). BIRDEM is a global leader in diabetes care, operating the world’s largest diabetic outpatient facility under one roof and a 650-bed inpatient hospital offering modern multidisciplinary care.

In addition to patient care, BIRDEM is a hub for education and research. It offers 14 postgraduate courses and diplomas, making it the largest private-sector provider of postgraduate medical education in Bangladesh. Recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Regional Collaborating Centre for Research in the Prevention and Control of Diabetes, BIRDEM is a leader in biomedical research.

Further expanding its services, BADAS operates the Mohila and Shishu Diabetes Endocrine and Metabolic Hospital in Segunbagicha, approved by ECNEC. BIRDEM comprises six outpatient departments, 28 inpatient units, six laboratories, and ten research and academic departments, making it a comprehensive centre for diabetes care, education, and research.
