Dhaka Shishu Hospital

About Us

Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital is the largest children’s hospital in Bangladesh and is a government-supported tertiary care facility with 640 beds dedicated to the healthcare of children.

The hospital was established just a few months after Bangladesh’s liberation, in March 1972, as the country’s only specialized children’s hospital. Initially, it began its services in a private house in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, with only 50 indoor beds. The Out-Patient Department (OPD) was set up in a tent in nearby Sukrabad, Dhaka, at the same time. The hospital received crucial early financial support from organizations like “Save the Children Fund, UK” and later “World Vision, Bangladesh.”

In December 1974, the National Economic Council (NEC) of Bangladesh, chaired by the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, approved a plan to build a 250-bed children’s hospital, with an expansion capacity to 650 beds. Following this, in March 1975, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare transferred the project site to its current location in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Shyamoli, Dhaka.

Dhaka Shishu Hospital began operations at this new site in June 1977. The construction was funded through government grants and the DSH trust fund, which was raised through donations, public lotteries, and concerts. The project was supervised by a committee from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with notable figures such as the late Prof. Tofayel Ahmed, the Founder Member Secretary of the Management Board, being involved in the construction committee.

On January 17, 2012, Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone for a new 9-story building for the hospital. At the same time, she inaugurated the Pediatric Cardiac Center, which includes cardiac surgery, a cath-lab, and a cardiac ICU. This facility is the first of its kind for children in the country, offering specialized heart care for young patients.

Dhaka Shishu Hospital continues to be a cornerstone of pediatric healthcare in Bangladesh, providing vital services to children across the nation.
