National Institute of Diseases of the Chest & Hospital
The National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital (NIDCH) is located in Mohakhali, Dhaka. It was originally established in 1955 as the “TB Hospital.” After the Liberation War in 1971, it was upgraded to an institute. NIDCH focuses on four main objectives:
- To provide the highest standard of treatment for chest diseases and tuberculosis.
- To offer training and support for future Post Graduate Doctors.
- To conduct research related to chest diseases and tuberculosis.
- To raise awareness among the general population and spread current knowledge about tuberculosis and chest diseases to general physicians.
The hospital has 670 beds, with half of them dedicated to the Department of Respiratory Medicine. The department is divided into 12 units, while the Thoracic Surgery Department has 5 units. Each unit is led by a Professor or Associate Professor. NIDCH also has a fully equipped Asthma Center.
