Bangladesh Neonatal Hospital Ltd.
Among the 3.3 million births each year in the country, around 650,000 newborns are born prematurely. While 20% of full-term babies and 60% of premature babies require hospitalization, the reality is that every day, there is a need for the admission of 15,000 newborns. However, we can only accommodate 2,000-3,000 babies across both public and private hospitals.
The availability of well-equipped NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Units) and KMC (Kangaroo Mother Care) facilities is very limited, with only a few well-equipped units in public hospitals and even fewer in private ones. Tragically, many babies die either on the way to the hospital or in inadequately equipped NICUs, under the care of untrained healthcare providers.
Another critical issue is the fate of motherless and street newborns. Every year, around 7,000 mothers lose their lives due to childbirth complications, leaving their precious newborns orphaned. Unfortunately, no one is taking proper responsibility for these vulnerable infants. While some NGOs are working to support healthy newborns at the community level, there is no focused effort on caring for sick newborns.
This highlights the urgent need for well-equipped Neonatal ICUs to prevent unnecessary neonatal deaths and provide proper care for our most vulnerable infants.
