Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College (ShSMC) is the 14th government medical college in Bangladesh, established in 2006. Located in the north-western part of Dhaka, beside the National Parliament House, the college boasts a unique architectural campus and an excellent academic environment.
Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital has a long history of providing healthcare services and has supported the establishment and growth of many medical institutions. The college is committed to offering top-class medical education, exceptional training, and quality research, guided by its team of eminent and experienced teachers.
The Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital was originally established in 1963 as Ayub Hospital during the period of East Pakistan to provide outdoor services. Equipped with pathology and radiology support, the hospital later expanded to offer indoor services, starting with 5 beds and later growing to 25 beds.
After Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, the hospital was renamed Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital in honor of Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy, a prominent figure in the fight for democracy. The hospital, designed by the renowned architect Louis I. Kahn—who also designed the National Assembly Hall of Bangladesh—is recognized for its architectural beauty. Over time, the hospital grew into a general hospital, serving as a central referral center for patients from northern and western Bangladesh.
Recognizing the need for expanding undergraduate medical education, the Bangladesh government decided in 2005 to establish Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College on the same campus, with the hospital being upgraded to a Medical College Hospital. The college officially began its academic activities on May 6, 2006, with 100 freshman students. The college building, including hostels, was rapidly constructed and inaugurated on January 17, 2012, by Sheikh Hasina, the Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
In addition to the medical college, a nursing institute is currently under development. Furthermore, to broaden the scope of medical education, the college launched a BDS (Dentistry) course in 2011, admitting about 50 students each year. The Dentistry Department has its own independent units, including classrooms, a library, laboratories, hostels, and facilities for specialized training.
